Actor Stephen Tobolowsky has appeared in over 200 movies and television shows. He has played everyone from Ned Ryerson in Groundhog Day to Sandy Ryerson in Glee. He has amused thousands with his true stories on The Tobolowsky Files at Slashfilm.com and iTunes. Here he shares some homespun philosophy and more true stories that prove tales of sex, drugs, and rock and roll are often the most humiliating and almost always the most enjoyable.

I like Amazon Singles because I like shorter pieces. In a related matter, I love anthologies. This seems to be not particularly the norm and I heard Stephen King say he thinks people are losing the ability to appreciate short stories. Technically, this is an autobiographical work, but I think the principle remains that people don't seem to know what to do with shorter pieces. For those of us who are fans and for writers, I think these Singles are nice. That said, this is of course a quick read. I enjoyed it and will talk about it a little, and found it to be very professional, with a lot of depth packed into a shorter work, but I know some Kindle owners who would undoubtedly consider it about a dollar too much. (It's a dollar ninety-nine as I write this.) As always, what someone is willing to pay is an individual decision.
I selected this particular one because I associate the author as being entertaining, at least in the role of actor. Hey, it's more than we know about most writers when reading them for the first time. Anyhow, my instant reaction was interest -- "yeah, I want to read that!" -- and so I purchased. I think others will be drawn to it based on a podcast and some other autobiographical things that I have not seen.
The anecdotes were arranged around the concept of the wild things we do, particularly concerning sex. Mr. Tobolowsky paints himself rather convincingly as a reasonable and even in some ways old-fashioned guy, who has still stumbled into some adventures -- at least two of them involving women who allegedly party for pay or are referred to by others with terms assigned to women in that profession. (Or three, my Google search found him telling an anecdote about ping pong balls.) None of those stories goes in the direction you might think.
I found the stories poignant. There was a moment during the second one where he is asked to essentially have a real life adventure that is a favored coming-of-age movie plot, and he doesn't want it. He finds himself upset and in a quandary as to how to back out of it. The set-up sounds b-movie material, but his place in it is as a human being who is not comfortable in that role. Come to think of it, the third story also shows his ambivalence over engaging in something that doesn't feel right. Still, he isn't judgmental and is humorous and self-deprecating in the telling.
Mr. Tobolowsky tells the stories with a little raunchiness and a lot of heart. Simply really good story telling. He points out that all the crazy things we do in our youth, the embarrassing and even shameful stuff, become what shapes us and where we find wisdom and growth -- and laughter.

Cautionary Tales (Audible Audio Edition) Stephen Tobolowsky Audible Studios Books Reviews
I had been so surprised by his delightful, engaging storytelling when he was a guest on the Nerdist podcast that I wanted to hear more. This is very short sample of his style, deep consideration of human existence juxtaposed to a comic turn of phrase. Creative, catchy storytelling. I almost gave it 4 stars because it seemed too short, more like a long magazine article, but priced appropriately and others should check out his work. He reads the linked audio version. I will continue my appreciation of his wit by listening to his podcasts "The Tobolowsky Files." And no, this sincere, he is not a relative, nor is he paying me to say nice things. I just thinks he is an insightful, amusing author.
I've been a listener of The Tobolowsky Files podcast since the start. Dave Chen decided to branch off from the /Filmcast to do something entirely different and entirely unique, and where Dave Chen goes I follow. Amazingly, the show he produces immediately proved itself to be one of the best, most compelling and most original podcasts out there. Stephen Tobolowsky may be one of the ultimate "that guy" actors, but he has proven himself to be so much more.
Simple put, Stephen Tobolosky is the best storyteller I have ever heard. With each episode of The Tobolosky Files, Stephen makes me laugh and cry and ruminate on life's greatest mysteries and beauties. And luckily none of that great quality is lost in mere written word. Stephen's incredible voice comes through loud and clear in the pages of this, his first Single.
Cautionary Tales is a quick read, but it's a quick read filled with anything you could want from great writing. It's got charm and wit and pathos. It's funny and thought-provoking and inspiring. Beat of all, Cautionary Tales is a deeply human piece of writing. It speaks to the core of what drives us as people and it revels in finding the good even in the bad.
At $1.99, Cautionary Tales is an absolute steal. It's a very quick read, but it's worth absolutely every penny. If you are a fan of great stories told well and with great sense of the author's character I suggest you drop whatever you're doing, pay the two bucks and enjoy some quality time with Mr. Stephen Tobolowsky. I know I can't wait for more.
I've gone on at length to anyone who will listen about how wonderful The Tobolowsky Files (a podcast of stories told by character actor Stephen Tobolowsky) is to listen to, how it may be one of the best podcasts available out there, and how Tobo's stories are funny, moving, profound, and always engaging. So it's no surprise to find that Tobo's writing debut - a short piece available at a low rate through 's new Singles program - has a lot of that same joy and storytelling talent. In telling his "cautionary tales," Tobo tells a few stories of sexual misadventures (don't worry - these are PG-13 at worst), all while expounding on his theory that our brain contains impulses that force us to choose between what we want, what we need, and what the Rolling Stones would do while they're on tour. To be fair, the end result isn't one Tobo's best tales. It's all very funny (I laughed out loud more than once) and enjoyable, but it lacks the cohesion and thematic complexity of his best works, to say nothing of his willingness to explore darker material. All of that being said, it's still a lot of fun to read, the price can't be beaten, and it's nice to find that Tobo's stories are just as well told on the page as they are verbally. And, of course, if you're a fan of the podcast, you'll find a lot to love here. As for those of you who don't listen to the podcast....what's wrong with you? Go subscribe and take the time to go through the archives. You won't be disappointed.
